The
Sandakan Yacht Club (SYC) was established in early 1952 and is one of the oldest
yacht club in the country. Robin Gossip was its first commodore in 1952. Among
the WIPs who visited the clubhouse during the early days included the Duchess of
Kent on October 20 1952 when she was in Sandakan to officiate at the opening of
the Duchess of Kent Hospital.
Situated just off the northern end of Sandakan Town, along Buli Sim-Sim road,
SYC has grown from a humble beginning of a small wooden structure built along
the waterfront, to become one of the more established maritime landmarks clearly
visible to seafarers entering and leaving the Sandakan harbour.
The
initial membership of 45 has grown to over 400 today. SYC has also forged
many affiliations with clubs both within Malaysia and internationally. The SYC
has over the years produced some of Sabah's top sailors and one of them is 2006
Asian Games gold medalist Rufina Tan.
