INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS
YEAR 2004
Rufina had her
first taste of international competition in the Asean Optimist
Championship held in Singapore from 29 December – 5 January 2003, where
she was 8th in the Girls’ category and 29th overall. She was in the team
racing which got Malaysia the silver medal. Upon selection in the
Gemilang team in December 2003, she competed in the IODA Asian Sailing
Championship in Mumbai, India, where she won the 3rd place in the Girls’
category and 12th placing in the overall. She then competed in the IODA
World Sailing Championship in Ecuador on July 14th-25th July 2004, where
she was 17th in the Girls’ category and 146th position overall. In the
same year, she competed in the IODA Asian Championship in Hayama, Japan
where she came 6th in the Girls’ category and 21st overall. Finally, in
December 2004, she competed in the ASEAN Championship in Chaungtha,
Myanmar, where she took the 6th place overall and 3rd place in the girls’
category.
YEAR 2005
From 17-27 March
2005, she competed in the IODA South American Championship in Buenos
Aires, Argentina, where she came 6th overall and 2nd in the Girls’category.
On the 2-6 July 2005, she competed in the Flanders Youth Regatta in
Belgium, where she came top overall. She recently took part in the IODA
World Championship (world ranking regatta) held in St. Moritz,
Switzerland, where she took the 5th sport in the girls’ category and the
22nd placing overall. She was in the Malaysian team racing where they won
the silver.
In the ASEAN
Championship that was held from 20-25 August in Port Dickson, Malaysia,
she bagged the top spot in the Girls’ category and 2nd overall. In the
IODA Asian Championship that was held in Pattaya, Thailand from 29 Oct – 6
November 2005, Rufina took 2nd place in the Girls’ category and 6th
overall. In the recently held Sea Games in Subic Bay, Philippines in
November, Rufina took the silver medal, losing the top spot on the same
points due to countback.
22 December 2005,
Rufina was crowned the overall champion of the 2005 MYA/Milo National
Yachting Circuit Championship at the Balok Recreation Centre, Kuantan. She
won the Overall Optimist category, Division A Overall Optimist, Team
Optimist, Division A Team Optimist, and Malaysian Optimist Ranking Regatta
(women division). Rufina came in second in the Malaysian Optimist Ranking
Regatta 2005 (Overall), Overall Optimist (Individual) and Division A
Optimist (individual).
YEAR 2006
In February 2006,
Rufina flew back to Kota Kinabalu to compete in the City Day Regatta held
in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. She took top spot, beating other Gemilang
sailors.
In the recently
held 12th Asian Sailing Championship held in Doha, Qatar, Rufina took the
1st spot, beating her good friend representing Singapore, Griselda Khng.
It was tough but she did Malaysia proud by being the only one in the
Malaysian team bringing back the gold!
After returning
from Qatar, she then competed in the IODA South American Regatta in
Columbia and won the 1st placing (Gold) for Girls’ category and 3rd
placing overall.
She received 1st
placing again in her recent achievement when she joined the training and
closed regatta in Peru.
